GoPro Hero4 Black: the camera action in professional mode
If its price is high (€480 / $526.6, approximately at the time), the small camcorder has latest technological refinements in video, which goes far beyond the small film the weekend between friends and use which is specifically intended for professional productions.
From an external point of view, nothing seems to move at GoPro, and the Hero4 Black Edition takes over the design of the previous cameras with its advantages but also disadvantages. Thus, it only weighs 143 g waterproof case and just 83 g without its skin.
Camera weight feather so that can be easily set on a headset without worrying about neck pain the next day. Unlike the Silver edition, the Black version has no touch screen on the back. The settings so unfortunately on the tiny screen positioned on the front - and still not backlit and therefore unusable in the dark - with 3 control knobs.
With the usual, suffering are dwindling, but regular users will quickly opt for the smartphone application that provides access to virtually all settings via a beautiful touch interface. The key provides access to the settings, which changes during the filming in marker to quickly locate the highlights of the video. Practical.
GoPro took advantage of the launch of this new camera to change the battery. We cannot ask a brand remain confined to a battery model, but let's admit that those who hoped to reuse their old batteries will be for their expenses.
Especially that the autonomy of the new version (1160 mAh for 4.4 W.h) is still far from comfortable: count more or less one hour of filming that the camera stores in 4 K TV or HDTV 1080, and you can divide twice this length with the locked Wi - Fi. In tight mode, with the subwoofer so it is not possible to change the battery without having to dismantle everything. We râlerons also on the absence of power supply the now universal micro-USB format.
QUALITY IMAGE
GoPro does not clearly communicate on the technical characteristics of the sensor and the lens. We know just the photo mode delivers 12 Mpx images. As a first step, we will look at the video mode.
The Hero4 offers a wide range of filming possibilities ranging from the 4K TV (3840 x 2160 px) at 30/25 / fps to the HDTV 120/90/60/50/48/30/25 and 24 fps (phew...) via the 2.7 K (2704 x 1520 px) in 50, 48, 30, 25 and 24 p. The small camera for action thus covers most needs for projects personal and professional, both in dimensions and frame rate. Mode HDTV 1080-50 fps, flow is about 30 Mb/s (h.264, profile High@4.2, CABAC and an image reference, 4:2:0 and 8 bits).
The rate is the same for a frame rate of 25 fps. For an action camera, the images are quality, with a good dive, just exposure and Honourable dynamics. Issued by the GoPro Hero4 images are, overall, superior in quality to those of the main competitors.
GoPro cameras provide for several versions the SuperView mode. The sensor of the GoPro being in the 4/3 format, when the camera films in 16: 9, it crops at the top and bottom of the image to get the correct ratio. In the SuperView mode, Hero3 + retains the 4/3 format and therefore the native height of the sensor, but stretch the edges of the image in order to get a 16: 9 format while retaining more field at the top and bottom of the image.
The technique is known and proven for many years in the world of TV (Yes, there's still not so long ago, televisions were in the 4/3 format...). In short, nothing really new in this technique, but the result is rather satisfactory, from the moment humans are not framed on the edge of screen, because deformations are most important as you can see from the example. However, the impression of immersion is still more striking with this increase in field in the image height.
