The Nikon D5300 is a rather compact, lightweight body. Equipped with Nikkor 18-55mm VR lens kit delivered, all will not fit in a handbag but is easily transportable everyday. The swivel screen is a real plus in everyday life, it is the difference with the D3300, which does not. To you the pictures at ground level, surveys or selfies fashionable arms!

Under its little amateur SLR, the D5300 hides his game! The 24MP sensor has little to envy the experts models of the brand. Lowlights management and 12800 claimed by Nikon are perfectly usable if you take care to use the integrated management of digital noise.

Ergonomics and access to main functions

This last feature is disappointing. To qualify, you must activate the WiFi mode from the menu and change the wireless network from your smartphone to the camera body. The latest Pentax SLR all shared the same technical basis. Two years after the entry into the Ricoh Group, it was time to take deep recipe to go confront face to face Nikon D7100 and Canon EOS 70D: this is the task assigned to the K-3, the new flagship of the range and (finally) real novelty.

In 2010, three experts reflex were born in a month: the Canon EOS 60D, the Nikon D7000 and Pentax K-5. The first was a swivel screen and quickly a good price, the second banked on ultra-complete autofocus, all-weather protection and double SD slot, the third enjoyed a record compact, integrated stabilizer and advanced photo features. Three years later, the Nikon D7100 is slightly up, the Canon EOS 70D has largely revised its ambitions upwards ... and Pentax finally presents the true replacement for the K-5 (including K-5 II was a minor change ), called K-3.

Inside and out

Externally, the K-3 looks a lot like his elders: the chassis is still evidence that any of the K-7, appeared in 2009. It must be said that Pentax has here a recipe that works: his expert SLR is the most compact segment and at the same time, one of the sturdiest, with a fully grouted casing resistant to rain and dust, and a pentaprism viewfinder covering 100% of the photographed field.

The K-3 still brings some changes: first, for the video, here is a headphone output to check the sound recording. A lever is used to switch directly to movie mode and activating the button on screen referred also used to record a movie, logic that is reminiscent of the Canon.

Picture side, the two levers to choose areas of exposure and development have disappeared: the first is replaced with a key to the left of the prism, the second sees the function assigned to the new button AF mode or Info menu (as on the K-500 and K-50).

Finally, the right door hides not one, but two SD slots, and the screen is slightly enlarged.

Internally, the revolution is almost complete: few conserved elements of the K-5 II.

The K-3 will offer to start a new sensor, still the APS format (those who dream of a home 24x36 mm Pentax will have to wait), but climbing to 24 MPXL. Devoid of low-pass filter, it offers a filter simulation function AA ... the stabilization system: it allows to shift the few microns sensor during exposure to slightly blur fine detail. As long as you go in that direction, Pentax have been cut outright exposure in four poses, shifted each time the size of a pixel site, for each color of each pixel in the manner of Hasselblad H4D-50MS: it would have removed demosaicing and resolved definitively the question of moiré .

After nearly two and a half years of loyal service, it was time for the D7000 to bow. It gives way to a new generation embodied by the D7100. As often with Nikon, the changes are significant enough, the new housing adopting features from higher models listed in the pro division (D300, D800E). So much so that the D7100 is now the most amateur sharp end device, even before the D600 on certain points.

Handling, ergonomics and menus
For his D7100, Nikon went on a chassis ... D600. This is not really surprising, it is already largely inspired the D7000. He's just a bit more compact (about 6 mm less on each dimension) and light (100 g less).

There are so many similarities that we can we try a game of the seven differences:

the history screen protector Nikon disappears (pay a tear ... or not). And do not expect to add one, the notches disappeared;
    
     the thumb rest is slightly less than the widened D600;
    
     the mode selector receives a new entry, effects;
    
     a touch i Touches Down at the bottom left of the box (quick access to certain settings);
    
     the two stereo microphones have been implemented at the pop-up flash;
    
     the organization of the connection (but the inputs / outputs are the same compared to   the   D600, that is to say      with microphone jack, and output monitoring headphones);
    
     the screen resolution of 921,000 pixels passes to 1,228,800 pixels (but still 640 x 480).

Certainly, we must admit that we cheat a little, since there is a difference eighth at the reflex. Also the magnification passes 0.7 X D600 X 0.94 on the D7100 (as D7000), because of the different sensor sizes (24x36 versus APS-C), note the use of technology oLED for return information, rather than the traditional LCD. This is more varied, more luminous by dark environment and above all, it's blue - gray. A detail but this color change is more modern than the green usually used. Much like the dashboards of cars ... But the framing is always 100%. For everything else, finish, layout of the controls and menus, like Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The D7100 is itself also tropicalized.


Bring some clarification on some of the changes mentioned. The mode features seven treatment effects: night vision, color drawing, miniature effect, selective color, silhouette, Hi-Key and Low-key. We go from one to the other with the thumb wheel, its effects on parameter passing in Live View. There, Nikon is aimed primarily at the fringe most public of the wide target D7100. The arrival of a shortcut key i concern more users. It allows to quickly check camera settings or change them. But unlike Fujifilm Q key for example, can not change the values on the fly, using the thumb wheel. You have to press OK, which leads to the menu. Too bad! And why i? When in addition there is an info button on the other side of the screen, are there not a risk of confusion? S for setup might have been better. Let ...

Finally, if Nikon can put forward a screen resolution of 1.2 MP, it is because it uses an LCD matrix type RGBW (640 x 480 x 4) with four sub pixels (one white) . The interest in addition to the larger display finesse is that gaining brightness, contrast and energy consumption.

True ergonomic novelty of the D7100 is the 1.3X crop function. By taking a central portion of the field (4800 x 3200 pixels still all the same), the D7100 multiplies by 1.3 the focal length used. It allows to stick as close to the development of core area to 51 collimators but also lighten the images. The function will thus allow an increase in burst (June-July im / s) and unlock the video mode at 60 im / s 1080i. Yes it will settle for interlaced at this rate, or switch to HD 720 for progressive. Or return to 30fps / s for 1080p. The crop can be activated via the Fn shortcut key on the front panel or using the new i button.

Battery, dual memory card slot, flash output and menus do not change. Note that the autonomy down slightly from the D7000, 1050 920 views views (CIPA standards). Overall, the ergonomics of the D7100 is excellent: comfortable grip, referred luminous quality screen, nervousness well-dosed controls, dense but complete menus. We can still rail against the position of the control of ISO, in alignment keys on the left. Or on the not quite direct path to access the HDR settings and D-Lighting. This is a real embarrassment with which, however, learn to cope.

If the electronics of the 5D Mark II was good manufacturing quality perceived by the user (finishing plastics, feeling the grip, impact resistance, etc.) was below its competitor the Nikon D700.
The new 5D Mark III decisively changed that, not only it seems much more solid in hand, with a touch more masculine, more robust, but it goes beyond the simple perception since the housing is fully tropicalized. Each asperity, fragile zone is filled with foam and other seals. While many reporters have lugged the 5D Mark II in the worst places, 5D Mark III will go much further.

The autofocus that changes everything

Whether for the 5D and 5D Mark II, Canon has always sin by autofocus systems (AF) a bit dated: in his duel with the D700, the 5D Mark II was a good notch below. Here the trend reversed since Canon has integrated the AF system of its pro 1Dx the housing. Tested with 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and 50 mm F1.4, the 5D Mark III proved faster than its predecessor, even faster than the Nikon D800 in low lights.
The only flaw of this AF system? It is so complex that it has a dedicated menu. If the pros autofocus enjoy this wealth, neophytes who is satisfied with a center focus will lose interest. The positive side of it is that for the first time, this range of devices can finally make up like a pro 1D Mark IV or 1Dx housing. And especially since the burst was seriously revised upwards.

Finally a real burst

Six frames per second (f / s): finally a burst worthy of a pro body! If the number of devices both are in the same consumer segment - one thinks of 7 i / o Sony Nex 5N for example - this is a real leap forward compared to 3.9 frames per second of the 5D Mark II. Once again, 5D Mark III marks a real break and took the lead on the D800, limited to 4 i / s! If the studio and landscape photographers will laugh at this image debauchery, it strengthens the credibility "sport" of the case.

Image quality: focus on high sensitivities

5D Mark II? 20 Mpix. 5D Mark III? 21 Mpix. If four years have passed between the two devices, only a small Megapixel again came top with the 5D Mark III sensor. What do you win? Not a wider dynamic range - it's more or less the same - but a rise in ISO controlled better: when was limited to 3200 ISO on the Mark II, 5D Mark III offers better results at ISO 6400 and we can even use ISO 12 800 without (too much) fear.
This control is also feeling the video: when the noise misrepresented the colors from ISO 1600, we can now work on ISO 6400 while maintaining a clean image.

Only 21 Mpix: pros and cons

The D800 logically won the prize of the best-defined images with its 36 megapixel sensor and its rise in ISO as well controlled as Canon despite the greater density of photosites. Does this mean that Nikon wins the prize? Not sure: 21 Mpix offers more than enough resolution for many professionals (advertising, studio and reproduction of artwork excepted), and the image quality of the Mark III is nothing less than excellent in RAW - the Jpeg Images are too reworked for our taste.
But the advantage of the Mark III also takes in more moderate file sizes: When a shot RAW 14 bit uncompressed occupies between 60 and 75 MB on the map of a D800, the 5D Mark III produces images 25 to 30 MB maximum. This not only allows the device to provide a burst twice but mostly it avoids the premature saturation of memory cards and hard drives while maintaining a more than satisfactory definition.
In the end it will be your practice and your needs that will guide you in choosing one or the other box.


The EOS 5D Mark III is a device that brings the 5D online at maturity if the image quality is slightly better than in the past, it is mainly the side finishes and equipment that the camera brand its difference from the previous generation. Autofocus to burst through the video capabilities, Canon has left nothing to chance. So if Nikon resumes leadership megapixels with the D800 / D800E, Canon signs here a real camera reporter / adventurer with reinforced construction and performance (image, burst, ISO, file size) calibrated to "do the job" . Barely out already a safe bet!
